The Affordable Care Act includes a special provision for members of Healthcare Sharing Ministries, so Medi-Share members are exempt from the mandate to purchase insurance. We are thankful that the creators of this law included health care sharing ministries as a viable healthcare option.
Starting with tax year 2019, there is no longer a federal mandate to have health insurance. Form 1040 will not include the "full-year health care coverage or exempt" box, and a Form 8965 is not necessary.
However, if you live in Massachusetts, New Jersey, or Washington D.C., you have specific requirements as a members of a health care sharing organization when filing your state income taxes. Read more.
